An australian inventor pretty much single-handedly has made the next step over the traditional firearm. This is a completely electronic method of firing, which means, amongst other things, pistols that can fire the equivalent of 60,000 rounds per minute, and whose description is quite close to a Lawgiver pistol from Judge Dredd:

"Presently in the prototype stage, the seven shot single barrel O'Dwyer VLe handgun can fire multiple rounds with a single pull of the trigger, provide audible and electronic confirmation of the firing settings, and most importantly, has an in-built electronic security system to limit its use to authorised operators."

"The VLe handgun has been filmed firing a three shot burst in just 1/500th of a second, which equates to a rate of 60,000 rounds per minute.

The ability to fire such ultra-rapid bursts can place multiple rounds on the target in a very effective way. At these extreme rates of fire, even a three shot burst sounds and looks as though only a single shot has been fired, except that three impacts appear virtually simultaneously on the target."

Of couse, this technology goes all the way up to multiple-barrel arrays that can fire up to a million rounds per minute, creating a "metal storm" of bullets that is perfect for intercepting missiles, as they pretty much fill a large volume of space with their projectiles.

Firing 3 shots in 1/500th of a second may be fine, but can u imagine the heat that would be generated from 60,000 rounds in a min?

Im sure it would melt.

I'm sure that's why they said equivalent to 60 000 rounds/minute. If you can fit 60 000 rounds in a pistol, then fire them all off in a minute, I'll be impressed

It can't sustain that rate of fire, it's just that when it does fire it's pretty damned fast.

A pistol wouldnt be firing that, but the technology could be adapted to something larger like turrets or something.

With the sky filling with that amount of bullets you could use it as an anti-missle screen.

Uhm, are you sure that they dont mean 60 shots a minute? First of all, 60000 sounds a bit unrealistic, because think about what you could destroy with 60000 bullets, should be a small house that you can destroy with that mount of bullets.

And download that video, 60 shots a minute=1 shot a second, and thats just what it looks like in the video...

That's because it fires in bursts, so pretty much 3 bullets at a time. It looks like one, it's actually three. If it kept firing at the same rate (without stop between bursts) it would be 60000 rounds, but it can't. It's a bit misleading. It's still a cool gun.
