Default New to avi files downloaded..can't play

First of all..wtf, can't the all powerfull new Windows Media Player 9.0
decode downloaded avi files and play other than just the damn music?
Seems they gotta be snooty "windows media player avi type files".

I go to load plugins for same and find I have to pay $9.99 or something
to play downloaded avi files for Windows media player 9.0 with XP.
Screw that!

Obviously, there are different types of avi files?

Why does Windows even list a type of file called Windows AVI as(.avi) files
and make it seem like ALL .avi's can be played back on that shit program?
Seems kinda stupid for them to denote a type of avi that has to be converted
to play on their stupid little player.
My main goal is to play a Desert Combat avi file. I don't own DVD's and don't want some massive confusing to configure player. Demo or freeware is a requirement too.

I went searching for a simple player to play back a downloaded .avi file.
I got kinda frustrated with it all. HELP PLEASE!
