Its pretty obvious that gamers are still frowned upon by society in most places (at least here in Germany especially the older generations lack a general understanding for video games).
However, amongst youger people, especially males, video games seem to be one of the most predominant forms of entertainment. Most young fellows I know have some sort of virtual entertainement system, be it a console or a gaming PC. Of course most casual players wouldn´t consider themselves serious gamers but I that a lot of people seem to be slightly "ashamed" of the fact that they spend a large part of their free time playing video games. I´ve just started an appreticeship and I´ve come together with a whole bunch of new people. However, when we were supposed to introduce ourselves, I was the only one who admited "PC games are a hobby of mine". Later on as I got to know them better though, it turned out that a good 50% of them young fellows spend a decent bunch of their times playing either console of PC games. Only why wouldn´t they admit it ? Do you really need that much courage to admit your a gamer ?

To be brutally honest most people think of gamers as wearing glasses, fat, smelly, living at home and like to masturbate over lingerie catalouges.
But seriously it is a bit of a "geeky" thing to do in most peoples eyes. I know people of all ages and backgrounds who are gamers. It just seems that we are still have a bit of a social stigma attached to us. I admit freely to being a gamer when I meet people. If they dont like it its their problem not mine ![]()

TBH if you hide your hobby in the closet its never going to be socially aceptable.
For the most part I would say in England console gaming is accepted as a pastime. PC gaming is still slightly fringe however games such as The sims have gone a long way to rectify this. |

I admit to it openly, and am noted among my friends as the geeky one. The only time I hold back is when I start talking about people I know over the internet. I say I met them at the airport or something, never over the internet.

Yeah...i'm always wary of revealing that fact. I mean most people I know from the net really are "normal" people. I just think twice before admitting how I met these people ![]()

Nope, not at first. From experience, if you say you're a gamer straight away, they automatically assume you're a loser and that's that. Whereas, if they get to know me first and realise just how speshul I am, then I can talk about gaming freely without scaring em off.

I used to be a bit afraid of mentioning i played computer, not so much anymore.
A couple of years back its virtually all i did, play video games all day, I was quite happy that way. These days i dont do that much gaming; its mostly about cycling through old games like Starcraft, CS, Heroes of might and magic, and BF. Ill play the occasional game online and thats about it. I go to the gym every day and i hardly look like a nerd, so i dont mind mentioning i play lots of computer games. |

I don't think gaming is a geeky thing to do... It just is when it becomes obsessive. I mean, c'mon. What guy doesn't play a video game once in awhile? |

When I tell people at work they usually smirk or look at me like I'm an idiot. When I tell them who I've met and chatted with they are totally not impressed. They act like gaming is a complete waste of time and money, that there are far better things to spend your life on. And they're the same people that talk about how they hate their home life, their wife is a spend happy bitch that doesn't like to fuck, their kids are social train wrecks, or they spend their entire non-working time in the garden, cutting their grass 4 times a week, or hiding in the woods waiting for something to walk by so they can "git'er".
I like gaming. There is always something new to look forward to. Communities beyond belief, with a variation of people too great to try and explain to people that just don't get it. They sit at home and watch Desperate Housewives with their desperate housewives. Last night I didn't watch TV. I found a clan server that had 10 clannies (USA) teamed up against 8 pubbers.......................so of course you join that shit. Anyway, the second I login I apply for command. 10 kills 0 deaths and 42 points, gold star and a basic assault badge............with the win against 10 clan homos on their server, without comms. Granted most times I'm getting my ass handed to me, but last night I stomped'em good. Second night in a row actually that I pwned. And you just can't explain that to grumpy old men.

I eventually do sorta, but never to girls really. Except for the "yeah I just play them when Im really bored' kind of thing.
I have a group of friends that I keep pretty in the dark about it untill a couple days ago. One guy needed to upgrade his pc to use some recording software, and I eventually decided it was a greater need to tell him not to upgrade his 2.2ghz p4 to 2.4ghz so he could meet the reccomended requirements. "dude you know shit about computers?" I purposefully walk around the long way to my C++ class. with the exception of a 300lb six and a half foot tall samoan jock that sits next to me (who ironically enough has an ipod nano), the class is full of navallords.

I wouldnt admit to gaming really, its not exactly a quality the chicks look for.
urs: Hey how are you? Blond: Oh hi, not bad. Cool party? urs: Yeah yeah its pretty good. Blond: Did i hear you talking about flying or something over there? urs: Yeah yeah, im in a clan. Blond: Whats a clan? urs: Its when lots of guys get together from all over australia and play a video game on the internet. I was the captain of the airforce for my clan. They used to address me as Captain urseus, thats my cool internet name, and we would talk to each other over voice chat. Sound of mace spraying urs: MY EYES!!
