Default Samsung 24" 245B

Hey all,

I've been looking at this monitor for a while. Now I don't currently have an HD-DVD drive in my PC, but I plan to get one within a couple of months. Is this monitor HD ready, or is HDCP just the encryption between the GPU and screen?

What you all think of this screen?

Samsung SM-245B 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black

Cheers!

Yes, native res is 1920x1200 so it will support 1080p. I don't know if it does 1 to 1 pixel mapping though, if it doesn't then 1080p will most likely get stretched to 1200.

As for HDCP (High-definition Digital Content Protection), you're correct in that it's a form of DRM.

What do I think of the screen? Well, it's a TN panel so that would put me off. Saying that, from reviews I've seen, its one of the best 24" TN's out there. It's also a bit lacking as far as ports/connections go, there's no HDMI, for example. Again, not really an issue for you if you're not planning on a stand-alone HD source.

Yup the things you have mentioned there are the exact things that are holding me back. I won't be using it for anything other than a PC monitor, so I won't really need HDMI.

Would not having 1:1 pixel mapping actually stretch the HD image? What about regular DVDs?

I just got a got this Samsung 22" and I am amazed by the colors I can see now. I didn't even know the colors on BF2 maps like Kubra Dam could be so bright and vibrant (there is a sunset now!) until I added the MagicColor option on the monitor. COD4 is fairly distracting as well with all its color and brightness.

Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 226BW Black 22" 2 ms (GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 700:1(DC 3000:1) - Retail

I almost got that 24" monitor for around $320 from frys.com but they sold out, so I went with the 22" and it has looked great so far. I think Samsung has a 2-3 year return policy also if you find dead pixels, so I don't think you have much to worry about. Mine didn't come with an HDMI outlet, as mentioned above, but I think there are converters out there if the necessity presents itself.

Thanks RP.

Does the absense of HDMI mean that these LCD screens are not HD?

It's high res that's for sure, but as NL says, I don't think it is HD ready. HD isn't vital for my needs, I don't even have an HD-DVD drive in my PC, I just wanna future proof a bit.

Still, no doubt movies will look great on a 24" widescreen

If it doesn't say HD and it doesn't have any HD inputs, then it's not HD.

Er, DVI is an HD input, hell, so is a D-Sub connection for that matter. You can buy TV's that are full HD and only have either component or DVI connections, but they're still HD.

And before any one says "yeah, but you need HDMI to play HDCP movies", you don't, DVI is HDCP compliant.

<edit> If you really want a quality monitor that has more inputs than you can shake a stick at, grab yourself one of these for the bit of extra cash.
</edit>

That's kind of what was getting me confused. I thought DVI-D was HD, but I wasn't sure. I wish I could afford one of those BenQs. I'm really limited to about £350.

To be honest mate, if I had a budget of tree fitty, I'd wait a bit longer and save the extra £85. While the newer TN panels might be a lot better, they're still only 6-bit with dithering, for the cash you're laying out you'd expect the full 8-bit that you get with the BenQ's P-MVA panel.

I can honestly say you won't regret buying the FP241W, it's the nads!

350 pounds= about US $700 right? (give or take a few dollars depending on exchange rate)

I am surprised at how much those cost over in the UK. I have found decent 24" for between US $350-500. I saw that Samsung 24" you were looking at for US $320 on sale (very limited time). What causes the huge price difference?
