Got it working finally. Turned out to be something simple. I hadn't noticed that my psu ground cable to mb wasn't fully connected. DOH!
Still fiddling with Vista and making it like I want it. I have 2 DVD sata drives. One is a Lite-On read only DVD in top bay, the other is a Plextor DVD-RW in the next lower bay. I can't get windows to set the reader as D: and the writer as E: It wants to set the writer (in lower bay) as D: and the upper bay reader as E: I used the black SATA connector (slave sata connecor on mb) for writer and the red sata connector on mb for being the master. Bios reads the order correctly, I set boot priority correctly. Yet, in windows , it insists on the reader being E: and the writer be D: I prefer my DVD reader on top bay as D: not the other way around. Suggestions welcomed. |

This works in XP but no guarantees for Vista.
Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. Then click on storage, right click the drive you want then "Change drive letter and path". |

Grim,thanks. That worked.
Something wierd happened just now and last night having to make me reinstall windows after tweaking stuff. I set Control Panel as icon on desktop. Now all of a sudden (just like last nite) I can't get it to open. I can't even right click to get it to open. It appears for a split second and goes away. I can't even get Control Panel to open by clicking Start/Settings/Control Panel. I think it has something to do with Vista Special Permissions thing denying me. I'll work on it some more. Yeah, I have Vista as default right now, I just don't use it enough to warrant anything else lol

bit-tech.net | Vista sold 20m licenses in first month
20 million licenses in the first month is rather impressive. Hopefully that should speed up the bug identification and fixing. You'll see a lot of people waiting until SP1 before they upgrade. |

I've got new pc almost ready for a video card. Plenty of horsepower and nowhere to go untill I decide on a DX10 card.
I don't recall Win98 to XP having such a transitional impact as XP to Vista. By the time XP was public, most manufactures of software/hardware had drivers ready, or didn't need that much tweaking for a new MS OS. So far... I found a freeware simple FTP transfer program that works with Vista. I had been using WS_FTP PRO paid for. That paid for XP WS_FTP PRO won't work on Vista. Maker IPSwitch let many down. No Vista upgrade...you have to pay for full new Vista version. Many flames towards IPswitch company. Forked out $ for new Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Vista (got $20 rebate at least). Norton,Mcafee suck now for Vista users. Kaspersky is lean/fast/thorough. Never heard of it before. Forked out $29.00 for Winzip 11.0 for Vista. I may not have had to (not sure). Try all your XP software on Vista before upgrading. Some older software will work on Vista. Some companies sites want you to pay for a Vista upgrade that may not even be necessary. I needed new burning program for Vista, paid $36 for one on Ebay (saved about $25). I KNOW my Smart Card USB reader for digital camera will have to be replaced. I found a site that tipped me to making my HP PhotoSmart P1100 printer not need replacing. Someone found similar Vista driver list model drivers you can use. Acrobat Reader for Vista was a free download. SnagIt (screen capture utility) for XP works on Vista. They tried to sneak an unescessary Vista upgrade past me. Irfanview is a free simple but cool image viewer/editor that works on Vista. Upgrading to Vista is nothing like it was upgrading 98 to XP. EDIT: The reason ATI will be delaying the release of the R600 vid card is because they want to build up enough inventory of R600 die chips to announce 2 new developments. Some utilizing the R600 as integrated video onto the mb, and other possibly using 2 R600's onto one gpu board. AMD's aquisition of ATI is playing a role in the delay of the R600. I forgot the link..damnit, even the names of these two new offerings. I will try and post it. Last edited by Caslon : 04-02-2007 at 01:28 PM. |

Hahaha! I spent 4 hours on the net looking for a simple SmartMedia USB reader that is Vista compatible. (Sorry, this reader is not compatible with Vista x 20).
For my digital camera. SmartMedia type memory cards are phasing out. Thank god for Newegg. I read customer reviews of a $6.99 all in one type card reader that mentions it works with Vista. Awaiting delivery. |

My Texas Instruments one works with Vista. What kind of flash cards do you use?
Does your camera not have a USB cable to connect? Then the need for a card reader is avoided.

I never thought of that...but, that's kinda a bulky hassle.
thanks just the same. Anyways...in a few days new all in one USB reader will arrive. Supposed to be Vista compatible from a user review. Card readers are getting super technical these days. SmartMedia is old hat. Now, digital cameras use a SD type memory cards. Jeesh..I paid $800+ for my Olympus Z3030 Zoom digital camera 5 years ago. Cutting edge back then. 3.3 mega pixels of something. EDIT: The all in one card reader just arrived from NewEgg...it works with Vista!!! SUPER TALENT EXT-AI1-C USB 2.0 Card Reader. $6.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820609188 Last edited by Caslon : 04-12-2007 at 12:45 AM. |

wait, so my simcity 2000 wont work with vista but it works with xp and osx..
as does the rest of my life. chances of me upgrading in the near future: slim to none. chances of me having a reason to get vista in the 6mos-1yr future: none. unless BF:BC is a vista only game. and in such case i will _have_ to switch. After reading 3 pages of caslon trying to trouble shoot his machine and the software associated..as well as numerous online zine's reviewers complaining of similiar problems.. the vista product just doesn't seem complete. but then again, when XP was released, I was on a win2k station for another year or two before i switched. Thanks for posting your progress guys, it was really interesting reading. ps: does anyone know of a valid reason for the early adoption? just curious..tinkering is great, but if say doom 4 is going to require it, do share.. |

Well, if no one adopts it early, none of the bugs will be found and fixed. Some one has to blaze the trail first I guess.
Might not be the best way to run a software system, but its how it is, I guess.

Far as Ive heard, the next HALO is the only game with such a sysreq. One friend of mine whos' a M$ retailer has said theres an idea to sell the game and the OS as a bundle. It sounded ridiculous at the time, but.... *shrugs*
