thats a good setup, you will probably have to reformat. I would just for the sake of having clean install of non-conflicting drivers. But you may be able to get away with not reformatting if you have win xp which can recognize hardware and install its own drivers pretty easily.

My advice: Back up important stuff, install the parts boot-up see how windows takes it, and then decide. If your system is unstable you will then want to reformat because some drivers are conflicting with your old ones.

Yep all the old drivers will conflict {i.e, Cryslal sound and FIC sound}{Nvida drives formated with ATI}

Brand name 'eh?

I wonder how brandname it has to be. The company that made my PC www.abspc.com even had their own WinXp Cd version. said it was from Magnell or something. I upgraded the HD, the graphics card, new higher DDR ram, and all the optical drives. Works fine. Oh the same CD and serial allowed me to upgrade from Win 2k to XP and install SP 1 on my dell laptop. Not that I didnt legally purchase a seperate copy of XP for my laptop or anything.

But do the big name vendors such as dell put much higher restrictions on theirs?

Not exactly...

Format your hard drive (erase) and install XP again.

go to bios set primary boot to cd, insert windows cd, reboot, go though windows install and eventually it will give you the option to format then install windows.

I didnt think you would have to necessarily. Windows generally uses their own drivers for cpu and to a lesser extent - mobo. When was the last time your cpu came with a cd for drivers? Motherboards do but they aren't really necessary with windows XP since it can use its own.

When i reformatted my computer a couple weeks ago i went to the VIA website to download the latest drivers, installed them, !really! screwed up my computer. So i rolled back and stayed with the ones windows installed automatically and have been runnin fine.

So basically what im saying is: if your only upgrading the mobo and cpu you probably wont have to reformat. The upgrading problems usually come with sound cards, video cards, or other pci/agp cards. BTW i was the guest that made the 3rd post i keep forgetting to log in and i dont accept cookies.

Its not the best option, but I think it will let u move your HD from one PC to the other. At least it works with Win98 anyway, not sure about XP. But u could try it.

It will just detect all the new hardware, and install it for u, or ask u for drivers.

The Barton 2500 is a great CPU. If you are fortunate enough to get your hands on an "unlocked" one, one that was put out before week 39 I think...You can Easily overclock that bad boy like I have mine to 3000 and even 3200 speeds! As far as motherboard, get an Nforce2 chipset motherboard. They are great for athlon XP CPU's. Somewhat faster than VIA's from what I have experienced. A good board would be the Asus A7N8X or an EPOX 8RDA+ like I have Good luck.

How would you find the speeds of your mobo Walmart Security? I've got a VIA and and a (much lower model) nForce.

I've heard that the 2600+ is much better as far as overclockability compared to the 2500+. I read it somewhere on the future mark forums. As far as the best overclocking board to go with I'd pick up an A-Bit NF7S Series 2 board (Has the Nforce 2 chipset). They're in the neighborhood of about 100 bucks on newegg.
