The best way to learn how to fly the chopper is just start a local game and crash till you learn how to avoid it. Just avoid crashing as opposed to worrying about how to attack.

First, I started out with just trying to move around without crashing. Then, I flew to each of the control points on the map. From there, I ran attack runs on stationary targets. Once I felt like I was ok doing that, I joined an online game and watched how the other pilots worked and was surprised by how much I actually learned from it.

Awesome. I just get sick of the guys who call everyone into a BH after tking a fellow trying to fly, then crash it into a tree or a red wheel barrow and say: "I'm still learning." It's like: "Thanks for the confession fuck up, somehow i figured that out."

I've finally mastered flying the chopper with a keyboard and mouse. This forum and many others suggest that you need a joystick but I got away with using my mouse with the roller ball and am now flying missions with almost perfect control. I suggest a mouse with a rollerball because I was flying with a normal mouse and it wasn't smooth. Also, using only the keyboard was not easy...possible, but not easy.
I practiced with the Bagdad Airport mod - download it here... (DC) Baghdad International Airport v1.0 from Espklan.com **Edit** You could also play Bocage if you don't feel like dealing with a new map. After you've installed the map, go to Desert Combat multiplayer (Local) and select the "Team Death Match" mode. Then the map will appear in the list. Because you're not gaming with anyone else, no enemies spawn. PERFECT!!! Within the Bagdad Airport map go to the northerly base, secure the post by climbing all the ladders and watch the flag turn allied. Then the choppers will appear in the northwest corner of the airport. You can get an Apache at the first spawn point but there are hills all around and you need the flat airport to get used to controlling the rudder. Also, the A and F keys control the rudder and the W key controls the amount of throttle / collective. To make it easier to view your piloting, the moment you get in the chopper press the F10 key (also good for flying planes). As Morat suggested at the beginning of this Topic, the key to flying is using almost the same amount of reverse action as you apply to any action. ie, if you press A to spin, immediately tap D to counter the spin. Also, only tap the W key for throttle as it's much easier to control. The Forums also suggest that you stay very low to the ground as to not get shot once you're in action. Flying the choppers is bad ass. Once you're skilled, fly over to the "uncapturable" Iraqi base within the Bagdad Airport map and fly one of their Hind Attack Helicopters...the smoothest flying of all the choppers I've seen in the game thus far. Good luck and I'll see you on the battlefield. ... |

I'm better off being a gunner in a heli than a pilot.
Piloting the thing in my case is no better than trying to balance a football on a ball-point pen. F-4 Phantoms during vertical takeoffs are more forgivable anyway. So all I have to say is that if you want to master the chopper that badly, maybe you should try mastering the F-4 strictly in hover mode first.

For a topic that was moved months ago... it's still here... WTF? Wasn't this moved to the DC forums? So why is it still here in the BF42 discussion forum? (All rhetorical questions)

I love flying the helicopter with Mouse and Keyboard, It's really easy once you get enough practice...But after you use the Heli for a while, the Fighters are impossible..All I use now is Heli's because I try to fly a jet and hover..I end up dying...=/
Tips for landing a heli Never land sideways..Always land straight. You do NOT need to land vertical. If your heli starts to tip over when you land, get out...It helps me all the time...The heli is more unstable with you in it, so when I land I get out and it flattens right out. I hope these help you all ![]() |

Even though this was moved, it still shows up in the original forum when someone posts. IMO that needs fixing.
As for practice the offline server is the way to go, I've been in so many servers where you see some tard take-off and immediately go upside-down into a hangar roof then respawn and get in the next helo and shout "jump in". Yerr thanks, I think I'll walk. The thing I practiced most offline was popping up. Try flying along the canyon in Gazala and hovering below that centre flag, then pop up so you're level with the buildings and you can bring your rockets to bear on the flag. People don't like that sort of stuff ![]() |

I've gotten good at recovering from falling out of control, so much that I use it when jets attack me. When I hear or see them coming, I just put the chopper on its side, and I'll fall out of the sky at high speed to the right or left. Hopefully I'm not too close to the ground, though.
Doing barrel rolls over the enemy base is always fun as well. |

I still fly with a mouse and keyboard, as I have since the game came out. however, I must say that I suck at hovering with the helicopter using it... Its too much of a game rather than a science, which makes it hard.
I overcompensate for the weight of the hind and the black hawk sometimes, which are much more difficult than the apache to remain airborn when performing tight turns that cause the aircraft to roll a bit. I end up sometimes smacking into the ground at a slight downward angle, not quite making it up again. But hey, I can't be that great yet, I only started recently ![]()
