Well there we go - long awaited, many changes, some good, some not so good. What are your impressions of this new revamped mod?
I'll keep my comments short and to the point as I have not yet played many of the maps that were included in this latest (greatest?) update. First off the size of the mod indicates much work done and introduction of a huge amount of new maps and additions to the old maps. This is a very welcome change and really changes the face of BF1942. There are some features that make gameplay very exciting but there are others that now frustrate me to no end: 1) aircraft handling: What happened??? Did the devs fall asleep? Although the flight characteristics were surreal in FH 0.5 they are terrible in this version. The aircraft, particularly the FW190 seem unresponsive to some basic maneouvers that should be possible under any circumstance. The same applies to the Spitfire and Typhoon. These are attack/fighter aircraft but they handle like light bombers instead. 2) Gun sights: Rather slow sights. By the time you get ready to fire you get shot or crushed by some vehicle. The sights excruciatingly slow now and do not allow players to quickly react in situations that require a stable shot at short distances. 3) Map layout Some maps are very well made and allow for quick action. Many maps, however, include "choke points" at which the battles stall. Can't remember which map it was exactly, I believe it was "breaktrough" or something of the sort. Either side (Brits and Germans) are separated by 1 river and only 1 bridge crossing allows either side to penetrate into the enemy territory with significant enough firepower to retain the newly captured flags. This is clearly not enough as most of the battle centers on the bridge and neither side can make any significant headway. Anycase, these issues can all be fixed in future updates. Your thoughts on FH 0.61? |

Overall i think it is the best mod out right now and probably forever on bf42 being vietnam is coming out soon. The aircraft are much more realistic which i love but i havent tried the spit and fw190 so im not exactly sure on how they fly. From what ive seen the other planes are great, maybe some can outfly others but it makes the game have more variety of aircraft for different uses. If there is a fighter then you should use it to take down enemy aircraft and use the bomber for ground and shipping attacks. But other than that i love it, the sights for the rifles arnt bad and i have never been hit by a vehicle before being shot. The key is not to run into the battle in an open area like a maniac but use tactics and cover. Even the BAR can be used to shoot at long ranges and is pretty effective.

My first impression on Omaha - 1944, the first map I tried, was Holy Bejeezus! I couldn't believe how well skinned the infantry weapons were, and how purely exciting the new map was. The detailed actions that take place in reloading the M1 Garrand are amazing. I'm a tried and true infantry man, and so far what I have seen is great. I can't wait to check out the other stuff.

I really like Infantrie combat in FH. Imho its much better than in vanilla or any other Mod out there.
-Some maps are really great in design and idea but not well balanced. Some maps are to big (Omaha) and some to small (Stalingrad) for dramatic game-play. -I don“t like the tanks vs. AT relationship. Most tanks die in 1 shot, which makes most tank battles booring. Also the AT weapons have a puny range and take ages to aim (put are also 1-shot kills mostly)

OK i am an FH fanatic, have been for a while and this is by FAR the biggest update and change almost to the point of a whole new mod.
Firstly it may be useful to note that this is a realism mod and the devs goal has been to try and achieve max realism with the BF42 engine. That is why this is such a big change from 0.5 as I think they have finally achieved max realism. I love this mod and the new changes are getting quite hard to get used to but i am adapting. The time it takes to zero your crosshairs is there to increase realism of getting you to use cover and 'ambush' enemies aswell as taking advantage of the terrain. This is especially true for support gunners as they are not meant to be able to rush in and eliminate everyone at close range. Their job is achieved in this mod and they do support and lay suppressive fire effectively. Planes. WOW. What a change from 0.5. Very difficult to handle and as you said before they fly like bombers and not fighters. This is especailly noticeable as many of the maps are far too small to do many manoeuvers. However the patch has now made it more realistic in the sense that fighters only excel in air-air combat unlike in 0.5 where it was possible perform steep dives and take out massses of infantry with MG fire and have enough manouverability to pull up 50 feet from the ground. Also when you destroy a plane so it is aflame pilots dont jump out and para safely to the ground so you don't get the kill. They have to stay in or jump and and get killed which was often the case during air battles in WWII. (of course there is a pilot class in 0.6 that i havn't tried yet with paras) Tanks now have a nice new sight that i am getting used to. I've not noticed a huge difference in tanks but there are some new tanks that have been add such as the king tiger I am not gunna go through the rest of the vehicles but to sum up: This is about the most realistic WWII mod for BF and I highly recommend it to anyone. Maps like Omaha will make anyone wet with excitement and joy. N00bs to FH may not like it due to it being very different from vanilla but in time it will grow on you just as it did for me. Good work FH team |

I like it. The realism factor and immersion are great. They also added enough toys to make it interesting. There's a helicopter, and jet fighters. If you expect it to be like DC, you probably won't like it, but I enjoy the crap out of it. (and DC).

Alpenfestung I think has one - its like a secret weapons of WWII map.
Could someone find/form a decent FH based clan? I am sick of the one i'm in. It's basically a kid running it and we do nothing league based. I know this bit of th epost should be in clans but what the hell |

Supposedly they're working on a new one - they had problems with the old site (bf1942files.com) so in the meantime there is no bf1942files.com nor FH webpage which is hosted by bf1942.com ... They should have something up at least to let visitors know that they are experiencing difficulties and look forward to a new site. Leaving this issue unsolved without a word is not very good business practice IMO. Shows some rather poor judgement and marketing skills.
The forums are still up though shuold you want to visit. http://www.gamingforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=483 |
