Default Air Power In BFV Not As Essential To Gameplay

Is it my own personal playing style that makes me think this, or is it truly that air power is not as key to gameplay in BFV as it was in BF42 and even more so Desert Combat?

Yes, I use the helos/jets regularly for transportation, but I don't find myself using them nearly as much as in the previous games for actual attack situations.

Occasionally I'll grab the Huey gunship and throw down some cover fire on a spawn point while some ground troops capture it, but I find myself more often using a patrol boat or jeep than anything else.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I guess it could be true, but I was playing in a server the other day where I saw two teammates on my minimap that were within like 20 yards of the enemy flag hiding in the brush. I moved in with my chopper and took out the people spawning there/protecting it and then both the guys on the ground moved in on queue. I didn't even expect them too really I thought they were just spawn camping the base but after they realized they got some chopper support they moved in and capped it, I was glad I could help.

So I still think air power is pretty important. Maybe even more so because with choppers its even easier to land next to a flag and take it than you could with planes in BF:1942.

IMO it seems that instead of having the infantry as the backbone of the game, you can use airpower and win alone. In reg bf you had the infantry get the flags with airpower for support, but in vietnam it seems that the helos could do just the same job faster without the help of infantry on the ground.

BFV would not be a vietnam battlefield game without Air power. I'm not sure if you noticed, but Infantry in this game are much much more powerfull, while tanks are alot weaker. Helos as a vital point of vietnam, but are countered by the range of the jungle. I think what we are missing at the moment is people getting sneaking in this game. I see too often people running out with AKs, trying to take out a helo. Um, thats not how the game is suppose to be played. Maybe its people's lack of exprience in the game, maybe its their general lack of patience, or maybe its that the maps were not designed with enough cover. Regardless, once this game gets worked out, and we start to see more clanteamwork, Copters are going to be alot harder to be a one man army with. Personally, I see them as an undenialibly important part of the game. Most maps would be very different and boring without helos. Whether as you suggested as for transport, or support. One thing I was thinking of, that would help with bases being capped by one man, is having the time to capture linear with the people in the server. For one man in a 8 player server, it takes 20 seconds. For one man with 63 other players, it takes 4 minutes or something. Giving a big focus on Teamwork, and no single handed helo skillz.

I wrote thsi over an hour long period after different times, so their might be a few differing opionions, dont think Im PMS'ing.

I'm with you on the sneaking issue, melee, but that's why I see vehicles taking a backseat to infantry warfare.

I primarily have been playing a scout in the jungles, and spend most of my time on my belly snaking through the foliage and covering a slice of wide open areas with my rifle. The great thing about this game is that it is MUCH harder to see snipers, so I can cover a road without the use of mines or a machine gun to supress the enemy. The power of the rifle is high enough such that I can pick off a driver of a jeep down the road.

I think the real power to this game isn't that it has vehicles (this is old hat by now), it is the environment given to us. The foliage and the terrain allows me to be a ghost.

Just my take.

Actually any enemy looking at you from 30+ yards away doesn't see the foliage. They did this so it wouldn't slow down their computer to process foliage as far as the eye can see. I find it kind of funny because on so many occasions I see people lying prone on the ground when I'm in my helicoptor and they think they're invisible, but from the height of my chopper the foliage doesn't even show up so I see them and destroy them .

Default that sucks

seems like i cant even survive long enough to snipe because of that. I try to sneak but someone from a whole mile away slaughters me with an m60. They should have at least made it so there are certain types of brush/foilage that is seen from all ranges.

On bf1942 there were bushes to hide in and stuff, but on here, once your beyond the visible foilage range there is nothing but regular trees.

First I would admit with all the firepower available to infantry, most tanks and AFVs are toast pretty quickly. That said I have been able to use the Sheridan/T62? to good effect on Flaming Dart lately (it's all I have been playing). The rate of fire appears to be a lot faster on BFV tanks for one thing so that is a plus. Also they are a bit quicker (as in quick like a PzIV). That said there is still the issue that you pretty much have to HIT them with your shots. Not liking that much. A tank shell is damn powerful and if one detonated next to you, you would go flying.

As for the aircraft I am seeing people really KICKING BUTT with the Mig17. Rather funny considering it's despription in the game text as an outdated and outclassed fighter. This is probably due to the fact that the Mig17 can dogfight better and seems to have a really good climb and turn rate. I was able to start a game last night and had 8 kills in the first few minutes. Before that flight I didn't really like the Mig17 much.... hehe
