Playing clean sweep last nite the pilots seem to be unbelievably good, I did take quite a few out with AA though,
but one actually came back at me low and hidden from lock by the only tree around, is it possible to know the maps that well and be such a good pilot? If I'm flying I dont have a clue where I am and seem to fly past so fast that I dont have time to react :/ Do you have to slow down ? there must be something going on that I'm missing |

Slow down. Well, be able to slow down and speed up. Flying on empty servers and practicing certain things will improve your abilities pretty fast.
Doing bombing runs, you can slow down to 350, just don't be too low. Approaching choppers for the kill, 450 - 500 gives you enough time on target before you fly past. The only need for speed is for dogfighting. Even then, throttling back on someone who's balls to the wall is better than trying to out run them with afterburners. Nothing like having a pursuer suddenly appear in your sights. Get on a map with a good armor spawn, like the Wetlands, and practice using low speeds. You have to find your joystick's sweetspot. If you lose too much speed you'll drop like a rock before you can adjust. Listen to the engines to get your feedback, and mark where on that joystick your throttle likes to be. When in game, keep your hand on that baby and work it like you'd work the stick in an Indy car. Don't set it at one speed fits all and try to adjust your work to that. |

I hardly ever slow down; in fast & out fast seems to work best for me, especially as slowing down and speeding up again seems to take an age in BF2.
That's the total opposte style compared to how I used to fly in DC, well, in the bombers anyway. In DC I usually took the Froggy or A10 up really high, slammed on the reverse thrust then dropped vertically, really slowly. That way I could take out 2 or 3 tanks with ease using the guns only before anyone even heard me coming. BF2 is all about bombs & angles of attack rather than guns when it comes to popping open tanks (especially in a fighter), it's much more difficult to get armor kills now than it was in DC, especially multiple kills, even with the funkeh target HUD.

i never slow down unless im in a jet dogfight and they slow down. other that that my aim is good enof that a full speed pass works for me. but for a newer pilot id say slow down just for killing choppers. other than that u should be well off.
and on bombing runs in fighters you need to be at a good angle and at FULL SPEED. the speed cuts down on the drag taking effect and carries the bomb straighter |

I remember when I was on point at my BF2/1942 peaks, I could take just abut anything out of the sky weather it was me in a chopper vs planes in DC, or whatever, if you master flying in these games its really REALLY easy to dominate and remember everything about a map.

TO each their own, I guess. I'd have to know how accurate someone is in terms of collateral damage (teamkills) with this speed thing. Knowing the map is critical in my view. Knowing where the edges are is one thing that's important. Having that spacial reference in all attitudes - upside down, climbing, rolling, etc. Also, knowing how to approach the runways for rearming is important. You operate on all parts of a map eventually, so getting home...knowing where home is...good thing there. With the terrain on some maps, knowing the height of mountains at certain points, and was mentioned above, getting the anti-air ground emplacements located for each map is critical. I never fly in-game on a map I've not flown for hours on an empty server. For me it's like typing while wearing boxing gloves. Better to let someone who knows the map have the jet.
