Default Plans for an expansion

Quote:
Battlefield 2 Special Forces an online success
Digital Illusions CE AB (publ) 2005-12-22
Digital Illusions’ expansion pack Battlefield 2 Special Forces was launched in the end of November 2005. This was the first product Electronic Arts sold directly to consumers over the internet.

The test was so successful that the PC game – another expansion pack to Battlefield 2 – planned for launch during spring 2006 now will be changed to booster packs to be sold online.

Every tenth copy of the expansion pack Battlefield 2 Special Forces was over the Internet, and the rest of the copies were sold to retailers. When games are sold online directly to consumers Digital Illusions earns more money per product than if they are sold through retailers.

- We see online sales as a very interesting channel in the future. Digital Illusions work together with EA to find the best solutions that favours both the consumers and retailers, said Patrick Söderlund, CEO of Digital Illusions.

The Battlefield 2 expansion pack planned to be launched during spring 2006 is now replaced by two booster packs. The change means slightly lower project revenues during the fourth quarter 2005 than during the third, due to a lower development budget. The anticipation though is that this will be compensated by higher royalty revenues during the first six month 2006.

The expansion packs in the Battlefield series have new maps, vehicles and weapons. Each Battlefield booster pack will have new but fewer maps, vehicles and weapons. Instead they are sold to a lower price: 9.99 USD. An expansion pack is usually sold at between 19.90 USD and 29.90 USD. Today at least two Battlefield 2 booster packs are planned for spring 2006.
Strait off of dice's website. I am sort of scared, with the small amount of new material in the expansion, I would hate to see how little is in a "booster pack". Also by then many of the mods will be out and who would really want to buy them? Sadly I probably will end up buying it because they will twist it to put me at a disadvantage. Finally I get out of this that you will only be able to buy it online, sort of like the Sims 2 holiday edition. I would much rather have a hard copy.

I think what EA are relying on are ranked server compatibility. I don't think EA are going to let mods be ranked so that seems like the only selling point.

I agree with you Grim. I like SF, but I can understand what you're saying.

I don´t see why I should bother buying a booster pack if it only introduces new content, not new features...

Whats annoying is in the past they have given away all this stuff for free.

Remember the stuff we go with '42. Coral sea, some new weapons on pacific maps, Battle of britain and Caen. All stuff it seems they will charge for now.

Thats because EA didnt have thier stinky fingers into the DICE pie too much. Now they own them and the thought of giving something away for free is enough too make an EA rep have a heart attack.

you people are sooo critical. personally, i would rather have a game that i will feel confident that it will run on my computer, than a half ass mod that gliches out every 2 minutes. sure, DC was the best. but think about how the system works. 3rd party mods are made by no life nerds in their basement that only care about gaming cuz their source of income is their mother. EA needs to make money, this is a capitalistic economy. give them a break.

Anyone know how FH2 is goin? Just waiting for that to come out to change things up. Even though i have somewhere over 30k points i dont really care if i dont get any more by not playin on ranked servers, ie FH2 or other mods. The simple fact is that the mod community is loyal to the player community and releases good and even innovative content while the original game developer doesnt, ie expansions or "booster packs".

How many mods have you played? Forgotten Hope for BF1942 was unbelieveable better than vanilla BF1942 (IMO)..which was made by the "pros". The Eve of Destruction mod offered some of the best infantry combat of any mod in 1942.
And then you have BFPirates and Interstate mods which are exremely fun. And all of these had one thing in common, great content..FEW bugs...Free.

At that price point, why don't they just release free bonus packs like UT2K4?

Someone remind him of Mr. Potato and the Peas.

Because, Zero, EA wants those green wavy things in your wallet or that plastic card.

The ones that did folded pretty soon after they came out!

I played more DC than vanilla '42 because it was a better game in some respects. EA really just care about dollars rather than keeping the community happy by giving us something for nothing once in a while.

A happy community = more long terms sales. EA are just intrested in getting as much as they can as quickly as possible.

First off... you being a supposed fan of DC, I think the guys from Trauma Studios would be affended by your statement.

Second... that has to be one of the stupidest things i've ever heard. These "no life nerds" have more talent in their little finger than you will ever have. The same folks that are designing these video games today are the same folks you refer to as "no life nerds". You're just stupid

Rambo: I never had an affinity for playing with vegetables, so your reference is lost on me. Thanks for breaking that down into easy to understand concepts though...

But seriously, my point is that if they are going to sell something, as a consumer, I would prefer to pay a little extra and get something worth buying, instead of spending a small amount of money for crap that is traditionally available for free.

Many other game publishers release the equivalent of "booster packs" as free downloads to add value to and stimulate sales of the existing products, not nickel and dime the existing user base.
