Guys, how would it be if we shot every air vehicle outta the sky from ground emplacement missles? Get real. That won't happen.

Consider ground emplacement missles as an aid to your air pilots and to
assist shooting down any enemy copter hovering over flag.

Damage any aircraft you can with ground emplacement missles...and let your teams aircraft do the rest.

Also... copter cruising in and killing you in your sandbag missle launcher?....if there are two teammates with tows there,
a combined attack by all 3 of you at that copter makes it toast.

Jets were never intended to be taken down by land based tracking missles alone. That's a gameplay feature.

I agree, it's pathetic if you have no pilots. Jet will just circle around and nail you in guided missle emplacement. Get outta there!

If the airplane drops any chaff or flares, but look away from the target. once you look back the sensor picks up the plane again, ignoreing the diversion completely....

At least if works for me anyway.....

Well, there's the matter of realism vs. balance in gameplay. As it is, I'd say that aircraft are rather overpowered, especially the attack choppers. It's damn hard to down them... two hits from the Stingers won't cut it, then the chopper turns around and nails you. Even a crap pilot like me has no problems staying aloft and raining death on those below. Show me a flyboy and I'll show you someone with many points and few deaths.

Aircraft in DC were too easy to bring down, but I think BF2 needs one (but not both) of the elements of DC that made aircraft more vulnerable:
- Stronger missiles... 1 or 2 hits should do it.
- Ubiquitous AA missiles, instead of only at fixed points where you are a sitting duck for "every peasant with a rifle"

After playing for a while I don't mind the planes so much. The worst thing in the game is the Blackhawk, mostly because the none Americans transports aren't even close to matching it.

The minigun has such a high rate of fire that its pretty much instant death. The problem with that is very evident in a normal game which should be renamed Chase mode not Conquest. All that happens, blackhawk arrives at whatever flag packed full with +5. Miniguns spray killing literally everything (even tanks seem to have problems or I could be thinking about the APCs) while pilot approaches flag, 1 second later grey, 2 seconds captured. Rinse and repeat.

On the other hand the pitiful Chinese/MEC equivalent is more of a spray at 2 rounds a second and not actually hitting anything. This sort of ties into the aa ineffectiveness as a quick minigun spray is a far quicker kill than locking onto them with the AA (assuming you survive running into the position). I suppose I just need to have teams with decent pilots.

Also after flying the planes a little, I can see how/why Dice would find them "balanced". You usually have enough bombs for one run before returning to an airfield (same with the anti air), unless people start getting a lot more accurate which is possible. The cannons are fairly innefective against troops too. On top of all that you have about 5 seconds to find a target, line up and fire before you're stopping yourself going out of bounds again. It also seems difficult to land the things mostly due to not enough room to slow down without a lot of snaking around.

Why land?

Plenty of pilots will do just fine with a mere 5 seconds. that is most likely more time then they had in their flight sim games.

pilots own. They are the Knights of the present.

You can repair by flying over the hangar but it takes forever much easier to just land the thing in it.

The difference with the flight sims is you're not always contending with severely restrictive engine Fog (my rigs powerful enough that I have the view distance on max) or with the out of bounds every 6 seconds. The target markers do help a lot though.
