Default SERIOUS DISCUSSION ON BF1942'S PROBLEMS- ALONG W/ MY PROBLEM

rAAr-
OK. My computer isn't great, and after attempting to install this game, I've decided to completly "pimp" it out. Tons of lights and what not, along with a hell lot of technical improvments. Before I get pimping, I have decided, I must get this game to work.

I'm going to get a new video card (was going to anyway)- haven't decided which. Anything at tigerdirect.com thats less then $110. What do you recomend?

I have 512ram, but it gets eaten away at extremly fast rates when maps are being loaded (and I'm assuming during the actual game, though I haven't gotten far enough to actually play it). There have been times when, what mac users might call the "dreaded blue-screen of death," has popped up for a split second (with the words memory clear enough to read), and has made the system reboot. What can I do to fix it?

Running the directX tests everything goes smoothly, except for the sound buffering part- I don't know if this is related, but during the movie scences in the beginning the sound flickers every few seconds. Sound card is built in, and haven't checked the drivers. Should I?

Proccesor speed is 1.3 GHz, I've defragged, etc., but free space is INCREDIBLY low, because of some shared folders my brother hides so he can use them on his computer. Should I delete them?

There are some other relevant problems. The mouse doesn't run as smoothly as it does when in windows. It's delayed. Also, while the map loads- it doesn't load. It moves average whenever BF1942 is minimized (I.E., when my patience runs out and I press ctrl-alt-del, then return to BF after I've bottled in all my anger, and see that the progress thing has moved) but when it's maximized, it moves like... an animal that can't move very well.

If the loading thing ever does finish, the text gets transformed into boxes, and it basically freezes, with the exception of one time when I created a game, and it froze in the screen where you're supposed to choose your spawn point.

NOTE: I currently have a crappy little Creative Labs: S3 Savage4, that reaches the minimum criteria.

Thank you for caring,
Marek

P.S. please don't say there's no hope- there's always hope.

Default reply to yo' shiot

couple things as far as suggestions go

1) search for the lowest price of a geforce 4 ti4200 on www.pricewatch.com - tiger direct is a ripoff. I think they go for something like 150 or something now, and they are overclockable to 4600 specs.

2) update your motherboard bios, and all your drivers. ALL of them. ALWAYS. check about weekly. and run windowsupdate (windowsupdate.microsoft.com)

3) defrag often.

If you're interested in a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 card, newegg.com has the basic one (no tv out) for $120.00. Check it out:

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...c e+4+ti+4200

I've bought lots of stuff from newegg. They're good.

Ditto on the Newegg stuff. A little higher(sometimes, not always) and fast, cheap shipping.

1. ok.....invest in another Harddrive, they are cheap..

2. i have on board sound and it runs... OHHH KAY...but get a phillips something...i forget... its like 29 bucks....

3.1.3 gig is a good enough speed....

4.512 ram is good...

5.instead of investing in lights and looks....put the money in a better vid card, sound card, processor, more ram, another harddrive

I'm sticking with Dx8.1 till I need Dx9, it's not doing anything for me right now. As for the rest...

1.3 can either be not bad at all, or horribly crappy (if it's one of the few 1.3Ghz P4s heaven forbid.) 512Mb is just right, but it still might want to swap to harddrive. When you say you have little harddrive space, do you mean like 5 megs free space, <200Mb, <1Gb, etc? On your (by default main) harddrive where the swapfile is, try to keep at least 500-700 megs free for the windows swap file. It will use this space if it runs out of real ram, and put not so important things there. But if the swapfile's too small, it's not going to be too happy, and will keep moving stuff around and you won't be too happy because performance will suck. So try to maintain that buffer zone.

Onboard sound can be decent enough, just remember to have the newest drivers for it. I have a personal grudge against all things S3 Savage related, so I'm biased against it from the beginning, but I'll second (third? or forth? whatever) the 4200 option. I've got one, it's nice, it's good value and it's still hella fast. The mouse delay you mentioned is framerate I'd say, or there's a mouse sensitivty setting in BF, look for it. For example, the default mouse settings in Unreal Tournament were soooo slow, this could be the same thing.

Get the 4200, keep some HD space free and everything should be frosty.

yeah, those lights add so much power

need a better vid card, savage4 aint gunna cut the mustard, not even supported by the game.

also look into your windows install, 98 has this nasty habit of slowing down over time for no reason.

I had this station at work, all the was on it was MS Office, Nero, and Partition Magic, the only thing i did with the system was surf the web, get email, burn cds, configure hard drives, and copy data to the network from hard drives, and the machine just got slower, and slower, till finally, after about a year, it was nearly unuasable, format the drive, reinstall everything, and its just as fast as used to be.
Just not right.
Most people never needed more than p120 and windows 95, if it was a good operating system.

I had a situation where i had to reintsall windows 95 on a p120, and it was just as fast and responsive as a p3 900. And the lady was all amazed just saying how slow and sluggish it had been and thought she would have to buy a new computer, all she did was surf the internet and book keeping for her business.
hmm, rambled a bit.

Anyways, check you windows performance, might be something to think about, im always starting to play with Aston Shell which has been showing improved performance over explorer.
