Checking the log
I'm having the same problem with the game trying to start, going to a black screen and immediately returning to Windows. A previous poster referred to what was in his BF1942 logfile....that never occured to me! Mine said "You have DirectX v8.0. You must have DirectX 8.1 installed." I'm installing it now, maybe I'll have some luck. Maybe you all could find some hints in your logfiles as well.
