I'm having a bad problem with BF1942...I get an illegal operation error (invalid page fault) and I was wondering if upgrading to windows XP will fix that problem? I currently have windows 98SE and I think it is time to upgrade.
But what I want to know is, will it bring up any other problems for the game? If anyone here has XP, then please tell me if upgrading will fix the problem and if it's really worth it. My CURRENT system specs: ASUS GeForce 4 Ti 4200 768 MB RAM AMD 1.4 GHz Soundblaster MP3 live Windows 98SE My system specs once I get Windows XP: ASUS GeForce 4 Ti 4200 768 MB RAM AMD 1.4 GHz Soundblaster MP3 live Windows XP home Please tell me if XP is going to ruin anything for me. |

Just the sound? What happens with the sound? And can the problem be fixed?
I also heard the same sound problem thing, I heard that you can fix it by disabling hardware acceleration in the sound options in battlefield 1942. But i'm not sure if this works, go try it and if it does, then tell us. |

If you're seriously thinking about upgrading, get the "Upgrade" version of XP Pro. Don't even bother with XP Home, it's really buggy and just isn't worth it. XP Pro is pretty expensive, but it's worth paying another hundred or so if you want a stable computer.

To all those nay-sayers out there against "WinXp Home" here's a news flash - it's stable, very stable. Those with "Win98" do yourselves a favor and get "WinXP Home" install it and grab the update "Service Pack 1" from Microsoft. You won't regret it
Those with the "SB Live" cards, go out and purchase an "Audigy" and enjoy your gaming. |

Big brother? What does that have to do with OS stablility? Deleting my files? I think not. Audigy for $150? Which model are you referring to? The Audigy Gamer was under $100 the last time I checked. I've never experienced any problems with SB, Audigy, or any of there other products...
Update: I just checked pricewatch.com and they have Audigy Gamer cards going for as little as $80 and up. As far OS's are concerned the difference between XP Home and XP Pro are as follows: The Pro version is "business oriented" with options including: Power User Security - supporting EFS Management Corporate Deployment and Additional Networking Features If I'm not mistaken the Os's are based on the same NT 32-bit Kernel which equates to a very stable OS. If you want to shell out the extra money for the OS go ahead but XP Home is designed for the home user and gaming. |

I have XP, using it for a while now, no problems. Works great with all of my hardware and "Big Brother" has never deleted anything off of my PC. And as far as home vs. Pro goes, they are the same core OS, with the Pro version having a few extra features. Anyone who thinks the home version is more buggy has just had some bad luck. Read the list of features added in pro if you are wondering which one you should get. Here is a link:

I agree lench. 95, 98 and ME were horribly unstable. 2000 was the first microsoft OS that actually worked well. XP was more user-friendly, and I have been extremely pleased with it. Every game I have installed on it (with one exception- warcraft 3 had sound issues) has worked great and bf runs like a charm. I would highly recommend XP to anyone who is thinking about upgrading.

Dudes, it's was acknowledged from the start, the networking components in XP Home don't really work with a real network! In that situation you are wasting your money by buying XP Home. Not the same as what you get with XP Pro. If at all possible only Get XP Pro!!!!
When the guy mentioned "deleting files" he was referring to the EULA that comes with SP1 for XP! That language says that by installing the SP you give Microsoft the right to connect to your computer without your knowledge, and to install and or disable any software installed on your computer, and they do not even have to tell you about it. This is NOT bullshit!!!! READ IT!!!! When you install the SP (service pack if you don't understand) you give MS full rights to do what they want to your machine. VERY SCARY!!!!! |

This hype began a few years ago with the release of earlier OS's produced by the evil "MS". Get real if that were the case Microsoft would've been on the chopping block for "privacy violations' and a slew of other basic rights a long time ago. This is the typical "urban legend" associated with "MS". Granted the people that brought about the anti-trust cases are whining even now as the "XP Service Pack 1" is downloaded and installed. Their argument is that there were not any changes in the pack they'd asked for. Funny though that none of these businesses had any input over the changes when asked to do so by Microsoft. |

it's a known fact that if you have more then 32gigs of HD, and you can go with the XP Operating System then it's a smart move. I run both ME and XP on a 160 gig hard drive with a RAID and the XP is SO much more stable and smoother then the ''ME''.
It has to do with the memory managment and file managment of the ''XP'' system, which works so much faster working with the large file system. I increased 20 frames per second just from going to the ''XP'' platform running the ''NTFS'' file system. Game starts up sooo much faster along with all other applications. Hope this can help in some way . ![]() |

ME was a joke of an OS. Most stable before XP was 98SE with all the hotfixes (endless supply of 'em). IF you're thinking of upgrading to XP I'd suggest the "Home" edition - pretty much the same as the Pro. If you're tilting towards the Pro, then think Windoze 2000 - much better off with Win2K than XP.
