i tried to install Battlefield 1942 recently and i keep getting this error.
Specified component cannot be found in the media. An attempt was made to access a component that dose not exist in the named media. I tried nearly everything trying to get this CD to work. I tried changing DMA to PIO , i tried copying it multiple times with different programs and wiping up and down. Can somone please help me solve this problem?? Thankz |

I'm having the same problem. I've tried a CD-RW drive and a regular CD-ROM on both DMA and PIO modes, I've also tried copying both cd's to my HD and installing it from there. All to no avail, any other ideas? Anyone having this problem with an OS other than XP? I'm considering trying ME on another HD to see if that makes a difference.

go to the computer store you have got all the games from and see if they will try to install it on one of theres since you said you gotten a couple maybe you can explain that this is like your 4th copy that doesnt work could you try it on one of your systems and if it doesnt work on theres then the media is messed up and you just got bad luck
and if it does work there something wrong with your comp |

ok guys, here's a tech's experience...
im also having the same problem. i've owned the game since a week after it came out, played like hell for a good few months, then shelved it. im getting back into it, needed to reinstall it, but now am getting this problem. same os - winxp pro (sp1 has come out since i last played, as has dx9, and im running both - these are the only os changes) same pc, with one exception - i was using an nvidia gf3ti500 b4, ive since upgraded and now am running an ati 9500 pro. this pretty much rules out the hw - changing vid cards i doubt would cause this (cant be certain, said gf3ti500 fried, hence the upgrade) Im thinking sp1 or dx9 - im gonna go get dx9b now and see if that helps. |

SAME THING HAS BEEN HAPPENING WITH ME
Here is my situation, WinXP BTW, GeForce4 sp1 I reformatted my computer and am trying to reinstall it. Me and a friend bought a copy of BF a long while ago, each installed it, and each of us kept 1 cd. (i have disk 1) Reinstalling it requires disk 2 so i borrowed another friends disk 2 combined with my disk 1 and my cd key (all cd's are legit) I get that error as soon as disk 2 is inserted, NOT a dirty disk error, So then I tried installing using my other friend's disk 1 AND his disk 2 AND HIS cd-key and i get the SAME ERROR (all legit cds from best buy.) Was considering buying a new copy but since that didnt work for that other guy, guess must be something else. |

Let me guess... all of you with this "specified component in the media.." error have got sp1 for XP. I got the same error, but the problem is not with the disks it has to do with windows XP sp1. I have tried installing the game on unpatched XP (no service packs) and windows 2000... both work perfectly, still havnt figured out how to solve the problem but hope this helps a bit. If anyone no's nything about a patch for XP sp1 that may fix this just post it

thats not definitive advice...I have literally just upgraded my graphics card from a tnt2 m64 (would not install on that with latest drivers) to a radeon 9200se 128mb (just got latest drivers and still wont install). I do however have sp1 installed. I bought this game a while ago and still cant play it f'ing microsoft. I tried downloading a copy off kazaa AND emule as well, neither of these copies or my original 2 discs will work. Any other suggestions?

I had this same problem, however I had originally purchased two seperate cd's. Through time the disks must have been mixed up and put back in different jewel cases. I tried using the "other" disc 2 when installing and this worked. So if you have this problem and you are using multiple cd's then try mixing the discs during the install. You might even try the "other" cd key. I am using two original versions of the game. Good Luck!
