Default Dumb Noobie multiplayer questions

Okay, so I got BF1942 and RTR, and I am getting my ass kicked on single player, not as bad as before, but I am definitely not a threat to the enemy yet.
I would like to try my hand at multiplayer - that was the reason I bought this (I was a big Airwarrior (RIP) fan and played for years before getting burned out)
What is the procedure for joining a mulitplayer game? What games can I join? I can see that password games are "private". Is anything non-password protected open to everyone? Will clan members let you play on their servers? I would like to get some multiplayer experience, but I dont want to think about trying out for a clan until I dont suck so bad.
Oh yea, what do all the little Icons next to the names mean?
I am sure there is a FAQ for idiots like myself. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

What Fishfinger said - ASE is a great help!

To asnwer your question - in the in-game browser, find a server that looks interesting to you...check to see the server isn't full (it's the fraction you see...41/64, 23/32, 0/16, something like that), and that it's not password protected (There's no little padlock), and (I'm not sure about this part) make sure it's a map that's in BF1942, RtR, or any mod you've downloaded. Highlight said server and clcik the "join" button...you should start connecting to the server. If you have problems, see the Troubleshooting forum here...

As far as the icons, they represent the different games/mods...tank for BF1942, Italian patch for RtrR - at least that's what I've been told!

HTH!

Don't forget, to play multiplayer you need to have the latest patch, 1.5. Otherwise you will get an error msg about data differs or cannot connect to server, if you see the servers at all....

As long as you're not being crippled by your computer, you'll get better really fast. The only time I don't die constantly in a game is if I'm patrolling no-man's land (no smoke, no explosions, no high-poly vehicle battles). I've had the goddamn game since the day it came out!
