It all depends on what your board can take, I can't even run AA, AF or anything like that without mine going screwy. I have a 1.6g P4, 256 SDRAM, Geforce FX5600 (it runs like shit, I hope its just being bottlenecked by my ram and the fact that that its only running at AGP 4x and not 8x like it wants to as thats all my board can handle) and Win XP running on a 1mbit cable connection. I think if your board can handle it I personally would go for a 512 mb stick of pc2700 DDR, It's cheap and powerful enough for modest gaming use. You should check your mobo's website or the manual though before you buy to make sure it will be compatible.

Also if you're on WinXP set the compatability mode of the BF1942 icon to Windows 2000. A few ppl suggested this, and I had painfully slow load times, but doing this made a massive difference.
It was originally on Win98 and that was the worst, no compatability wasn't as bad, but not good - Win2k compat mode though - very fast. Don't know why though...

I'm sure that's true, but this wasn't just a 'ooh, this is a little slow' thing. My load time... as I type - I just loaded in a map in 10 seconds right now. Before when it was on Win 98 compat mode it was taking 10 MINUTES... and i'm not exaggerating. I would go off and do stuff for a while, come back and it still wasn't loaded. It would go about 30% through the load, then music would stutter and the load would stall for ages etc.
Anyway, that was clearly a big problem, it might not work for everyone, but everyone I read that had this problem solved it this way - I was skeptical till I did it too. Now if only I could get music back on the victory/loss 'results' screen instead of awful stuttering, my BF 1942 would be working again properly for the first time in 2 weeks when I patched to 1.45 Alas, it's not likely to happen...

Thanks for the tip, but personally I like the music a lot and wouldn't be satisfied turning it off. I don't find it annoying, but what I do find annoying is that I get the clicking bumping sound at the end of the battle.

This is your prob. When I had 256 megs of memory, it took about 2 min. When I went to 512, it takes about 15 seconds.
