Version update

I am running a laptop with a radeon 9000 64 mb card, 30 gig, a gig of DDR with a broadband connection to the net. I had to move Battlefield over from my PC to this comp to go to college. However, I have no idea how to get my version updated past 3.1, which about no one uses online anymore. Every game i try to join tells me i have an outdated version # and if i would like to update, i click ok and there is some screen flashing, but i am taken right back to the server menue and nothing more happens. I'd like to get my version updated so i can play again. I don't know what i had on my PC but it worked.
