I am frequently disconnected from servers after just a few seconds. The game plays good and smooth when I'm connected, but then out of the blue I get the "connection problems detected" and then I ALWAYS get disconnected completely. I've tried different servers with different pings and different connection settings (modem, ISDN, etc) with the same result.
I have a cable modem with a Umax NAT gateway and a 16-port switch. My computer is a 1.4 Athlon with 1-gig of PC133 and a Geforce 2 GTS Pro with 64-megs. Other computers on my LAN with similar specs have exactly the same problem. I've been playing Codename Eagle online for years with the same setup with no significant problems. Quake III and other online games work ok too. I suspect a problem with my NAT hardware or possibly some ISP issue related to the ports that BF42 is using. I don't want to punch holes in my firewall and I shouldn't have to anyway, right? I should also point out that the game runs fine if I setup a dedicated server on my LAN. I don't have any kind of crashing problems at all. It's completely a networking issue. Finally, I've noticed that no two computers on my LAN can connect to an internet game at the same time. Just pinging servers on another machine is enough to trigger a disconnect. Any clues? Whatever this problem is, it seems to be unique to BF42. -Wuahn |

You're not the only one with seemingly bad connections. I play once in a while (ok every day) but I keep getting disconnected at random. I've tried playing on different 'puters with completely different configs yet the same thing happens. It's really bugging me too. If I'm lucky enough to get on one of the faster servers (I have cable modem) I get to play for a round or two before the ping goes wild and server problems begin.
It's really getting on my nerves!!! I've never had so many connection problems as with BF1942! Hope that gets looked after in the final release. Chef |

So this is the problem!
I couldn't figure out why I was disconnected so often without reason. Opening the ports in my router did the trick though - actually I opened them all via host mapping. They should be able to fix this one, or at least tell us exactly which ports to open. |
