Default What a great game this could be

Quick hello to everyone, this is my first post here. I've been lurking for a few days reading up on the game and let me say thanks for the informative posts.

I've played this game for about a week now and I'm definitely hooked. Line and Sinker. However, the more I play, and get into the game, the more the poor net code is starting to frustrate the living Hell out of me. I get into a game and am able to play for 10, perhaps 20 minutes tops before the "caution: Connection problems found" message comes on, and I'm unable to enjoy a full game to it's fruition.

I've read enough to know that this is a common problem. I also know this is Beta, but this game is supposedly gold now, and if I don't see major improvements it's going to affect my decision on wether or not I buy.

Running 1.5 ghz p4 with geforce4 128 mb ddr, on a DSL streamlined connection, I'm fairly certain it's not my end. The other posts saying similar things only serve to substantiate that. Blah, I'm venting.

I'm hoping they work this server instability out because like I said, this is a great game. Hell, I know Wake Island now better than I know my own neighborhood. But there is no way I can forsee buying it if the net code stays as it is.

/vent

Nice site and forums. I needed a good place to vent

That problem only surfaces up for me when I play on servers hosted on poor connections. Never happens to me on many servers such as EA.

Its definatly the server coding.

I mean you cant have lag like you get when it says your ping is 20.

I am unable to play on servers run on peoples computers, and can only play on dedicated ones.

Im almost guarenteed sure that they will fix it for the real release.

They will, EA and Dice said they are making a no lag netcode (with better connections probably, but i'm not saying the connections are bad).

Also, gentlemen, there is a bug in the Mp Demo, wherein the internal server browser refreshes while playing, lagging you up to about 1023!! There is a way to disable the internal browser as follows:

Disabling the In-Game Browser:
- Thanks again to Pike for this one! If you are getting serious lag problems after attempting to join a game with GameSpy or ASE, this is because of a bug which causes the In-Game Browser to automatically update its server list. Most broadband connections shouldn't have a problem with this, but for 56k and ISDN connections, this can be a real show-stopper. Warning: This will DISABLE the BF1942 in-game browser. Be sure to follow the instructions exactly (back up any files you change) so that you can re-enable the in-game browser at a later time.

In your BF1942 directory open the MultiplayerServers folder.
Rename GameSpyJoin_MP_Demo.dll by changing the extension to .bak
Make a copy of GameSpyLanJoin_MP_Demo.dll
Rename this copy to GameSpyJoin_MP_Demo.dll
The in-game browser should no longer function, so the lag should hopefully disappear.
- If you have problems after doing this, or simply wish to re-enable the in-game browser, just replace GameSpyJoin_MP_Demo.dll with the backup you created (GameSpyJoin_MP_Demo.bak). Do not e-mail the BF1942 support team.
Thanks to Blahman for his Post

Thanks for the info Metzger I'll give that a shot.

Actually, as irony would have it I logged into a game shortly after posting this message yesterday and had a completely lag free experience for almost 2 hours straight. Even more ironic is that I'm playing from NJ and the server appeared to be a German one.

I had an absolute blast and got to a point where I'm hitting moving jeeps/tanks from quite a distance in planes.

I also tried out sniping, which if you have the patience for, is the most fun you can have. Nothing like stalking up on someone handling a browning, or pulling gun duty on a tank.

Everything else about the game seems so polished I can't imagine Dice/EA not working out the connectivity issues.

Thanks again for the info.

The game really just needs time to be polished and have some issues ironed out, and that will happen over time I'm sure. Otherwise, the game is killer. Just takes getting used to and so does it's netcode. Sure, the netcode isn't like something like Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament. It takes getting used to. I have few quams with it right now, but that's simply because I'm used to it. It's not the greatest, but to those who bitch and complain in game about it all the time... shut up and adapt. It's a great game and one-of-a-kind.

Only one real problem with the game in my opinion.

Machine guns make the sniper rifle useless. Serisouly you can easily take out a guy near the airfield from the entrance to said field. Too powerful for my taste.

sniper rifles are useless unless u can find a good spot where no one can see you, and then shot someone, and relocate! if a person finds u ur dead, thats how it is in real life too!!

I like the fact that the sniper rifle takes some real skill to use efficiently. No like in MoHAA where you have guys that just leave the scope on all the time and sit around waiting for people to walk in to thier LOS.

First off i want to say i am runnin a P3 with 512ram GForce2-Gtx {not sure what drivers} but i rarely have a connection prob. Oh yeah i have cable conn..
I think as far as snipers go, we will not be seeing the need for them until the full version..Wake Island does not have that great of cover. Unlike Stalingrad, where that is sniper heaven..

NO no no you guys read my post wrong. The problem isn't sniper rifle being under-powered it's the STG44, Bar and other MGs that are OVER-powered.

I mean if one guy has a bar and the other a sniper but both can kill each other from a great distance what's the point of using a sniper rifle?

I get shot down by BAR in a plane more than I do by AA. That or browning. They chew me up ungodly fast when it hits the engine. I've also taken down about 9 planes using the BAR... countless with the browning and AA.
