Default Help! Freezing or CTD after installing DirectX9.0

I've had BF1942 and RtR for some time now problem free (I think I've been lucky!). Until yesterday...

Rise of Nation got real picky about stuff and asked I update both my video drivers and DirectX (was running 8.1). I do both and now BF and RtR are either crashing to desktop or just plain freezing around the time a map finished loading up. Sometimes it happens right as the map finished loading, but most of the time it happens about 5 seconds (like clockwork) after the map finishes loading. If I sit at the spawn interface it'll lockup there, if I quickly pick a spot I can "play" for those 5 seconds before things go wrong.

I've gone back to the older drivers for my Geforce 3 Ti200, and tried going back to DirectX8.1... the program seems to install but dxdiag still shows version 9.

Same thing is happening in Unreal Tournament 2003 and Freedom Force... they work just fine until the graphics load, then crash a few seconds later. Other 3D games (Jedi Knight, SoF, etc.) are working just fine.

Thanks in advance for any replies!
