Yeah, I don't know what's up with the maps. The original BF maps are good like Bocage, El Alamein, and Gazala, but the Road to Rome maps kind of went down hill. Now with the Battle of Britain map, everything looks like it was just quickly thrown together. This new SW map looks as if they just used a random terrain generator and then threw in some roads and buildings all over the place.
There's no continuity to EA's maps anymore. Seems like they don't spend any time on them. The maps are what makes the game no matter how good the weapons or mods are. If the maps are sucky, the game is sucky.
I still don't see why others are wild about it. I guess since I'm an older gamer, I'm not as easily excited about shiny new things.
I've been having a lot of lag with this thing too, no matter, I already deleted it.

I'd have an opinion right now if it weren't for fucking IE and Fileplanet. I can't download a GODDAMN THING from FP with Mozilla, so I used IE to DL the demo. Fucking IE pops a goddamn COPYING dialog box while copying the file from some dipshit temporary directory while I'm typing. ANY keypress with this box onscreen... CANCELS THE COPYING PROCESS AND DELETES THE FILE.

Jizass christ, I'm so glad I didn't pay money for IE, much less Windows XP.

Secret Weapons of WWII - Out of the lab, onto the battlefield
more like "out of our ass, onto your harddisk"

They better cut the crap and release something good, 2 expansion packs and both of them suck compared to usermade stuff
Bleh, pathetic (in my opinion)

Alright, I came, I played, I pwned the PATHETIC 21PZR CLAN, specifically [21Pzr]Stahlmann and [21Pzr]Panzrich. All they did was cry every time I killed them, and I didn't even use any "dirty tricks" like parachuting mines and expacks from above, or using kamikaze attacks.

SW feels like a minimod. The map does indeed feel like it was auto-generated then tweaked slightly. EA should think about headhunting for people from mod teams, because if this is all that money can do.... I've played more complete Quake 2 expansion packs.

Yep, lot of lag with me as well. Maybe it was just because there wasn't many dedicated servers.

What gets me about all of this is EA's business model. For an example, take a look at Halflife. They came out with a great game then released an SDK with a map editor and it has kept people interested in it for 5 years now. You're right when you say it feels like a mini-mod, because it does feel like that. Everything in here in some form or fashion has already been done and a much better job at it as well. Even the motorcycle engine sounds just like the jeep. It feels rushed to me.
What they could have done was released an SDK with a map editor so the modding community could keep people interested for a long period of time, then EA could have concentrated their efforts on a next release like "Battlefield 2" or something like that.
Devoting their time on a second major release would make Battlefield 42 truly something different and innovative. Maybe they could come out with more player abilities/kits and options, more weapons and vehicles, weather effects and/or day and night cycles with deformable terrain mission objectives, The sky is the limit.
So instead of revamping the Flat Archive engine and releasing an SDK, EA instead corners the market on modding and comes out with their own mods at 20 bucks a pop. The modding community can do a much better job than what EA can do ( might as well be honest about it ). I just don't understand why they are going about it in this way. If by EA and Dice spending their time on coming out with expansion packs, it takes away time that could be spent keeping the gaming engine up to date.
Here we are in August and September always seems to be the "Golden month" for game releases. The amount of great games coming out is mind blowing and EA will eventually be left behind since many of the games now will be in the same par as BF 42.
Battlefield Vietnam wont be out till 2004, but by then we'll have Soldner, Halflife 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Call of Duty and so on. I guarantee that these newer games will blow away BF VN when it comes out.
Battlefield 42 is a great game and I'll always play it and Desert Combat too, but I just think that EA is cutting their own throats by going about it in this way.

EA has more than one game develop team, the people that orginaly made BF are working at BF:VN now, i think.
And like the patches, the Addons are now developed by another team, less qualified and less expensive i guess.
(Thats why eg. the maps "feel" so different i think)
The reason for this ? Money.
Selling Addons brings EA money - not selling Addons brings no money.
As long as they can get a + of money from releasing Addons for Games, they will do it.

I hate it. The animations on the motorcycle aren't even finished. The jet pack is a joke? Seriously, am I doing something wrong, I can only jump up like 20 feet, and fall back to earth, i atleast thought you could fly from place to place. Right now, the mods beat the game.

maverick, keep hitting the space bar and you can fly places until your bar gets full, with the jetpack you don't even need a parachute because it slows you down even when you're not pressing the buttons in the air.

Well I still don't understand the whole expansion pack thing if it's just a money issue. Mods are what keep people interested in the game. You can't play the mods unless you have the original game, therefore it makes EA money.
Other game producers have learned this lesson and many of the games coming out have great mod support. Every game runs through it's popularity cycle before people get tired of it and move on. Unfortunately because EA wont support the modding community, many will be moving on when the newer mod supported games comes out. The modders from EOD is one example. Because of this reason, they will be going over to Halflife 2 when it comes out. Eventually Desert Combat will do as much as they can do with the game then they will be moving on as well. Since there wont be much modding going on, all we have to look forward to is the every 8 to 12 month expansion pack release. Judging by the Road to Rome release, which was a big dissapointment and no one plays it anymore, now with Secret Weapons which I can't take seriously and is not my cup of tea, I can tell that any future releases will just be the same o'l, same o'l. I can tell that Battlefield Vietnam will just be the same thing with a few new features. So you can use a chopper to haul a tank or jeep around, yeah that sounds neat, but after a week or two that'll get old and it just ends up being one of those "been there, done that" kind of games.
All I play anymore is Desert Combat. I don't even bother with plain old BF and it's not because it's not a great game, it's just because I've played the snot out of it since the very early demo of Wake Island and Tobruk.
Since I'm not in a clan anymore, I'm stuck with public servers. If those servers start running nothing but Secret Weapons and/or Battlefield Vietnam, then I guess I'm moving on.
I'm sure that BF will always have it's fanbase, but I bet it will thin out quite a bit. When the fanbase thins out, so does interest. When interest thins out, so does money.
It just doesn't make much sense to me for that reason. It would be in their best interset to support modding to keep the game fresh and offer an alternative to people who love BF, but don't care for their *ahem* expansion packs. A lot can be learned from Valve who not only support modders, but have come out with their own expansions packs as well. Day of Defeat is one example. That game is actually a modded Halflife game. Their next gaming engine will give the ability to have vehicles for people to drive. Who's to say that some group of modders wont make their own version of BF 42 with the added feature of "Rag Doll" physics which I wish that BF had?
Ah well, live and learn.

Wow... so nicely said, brings a tear to my eye.
I agree with ya all the way. seems to me EA doesn't keep an eye out on the long term possibilities but has a very narrow business view reflective of other major corporations - among others. hehe. companies suffer because of that too, they get pinched in the ass so fast they don't have time to yelp. I suppose it's all normal - business is business after all.

I've got cable and good system and I've experienced no lag whatsoever
with the SW demo. Are you connecting to servers with decent bandwidth?

There's hardly any dedicateds from what I saw in ASE, so I would suspect that the lag prob is due to non-dedicated servers. Even a good ping to a non-ded server can still get you a laggy game experience. I had no lag with a XP2500+, asus A7N8X mobo, 2x256 Corsair XMS and an ti4800se on 512k cable.
