It appears to be free to play, but you have to pay small, incremental fees to receive new/better weapons and abilities. It's like a free RPG, except if you want to have the "Uber-Master Brute Sword" in your inventory you have to pay a $5 service charge. The base game is free, with lots of additional fees if you want new content. I read a interview that had the DICE/EA exec saying he expected most people to shell out between $20-30 for the upgrades.

So basically, you start out with the crappiest gun known to man kind, and in order to hit anything, you have to shell out $5? I don't like the sound of that. But it is free, so I'll give it a shot when it comes out and see what the full story is.

I think EA and DICE have different perceptions of what will happen:
EA Quote:
DICE Quote:
I always thought a "sizable minority" meant more than 5 percent, but that is just me. In the BBC article they say that the weapons will be free, but if some people have uber-health/uber-armor, the weapons will still be unbalanced. So having the weapon upgrades free might be a moot point. It will be interesting how they decide to present everything, moving forward.
