Adverts on the site

Hey folks,

You might have noticed that recently we've started running advertisements on the news and content pages, aswell as here on the forums. As much as we'd like to keep BFNation free from adverts, they are necessary to fund the sites running costs (which Rexxie has been graciously paying out of his own pocket for a while now).

It's important to note that all money received from adverts is put straight into the site fund, along with any donations we receive. These firstly pay the bills, including hosting, but will also fund the promotions and competitions that you'll begin to see in the next couple of weeks.

Overall, we hope that the increased revenue these produce will benefit the BFNation community, and would like to reassure everyone that BFN is the same non-commerical site it's always been, as we personally gain no profit from the site whatsoever.

Anyway, any comments or feedback you might have concerning the new additions would be appreciated. And don't worry, we haven't sold out...yet

Sounds like a good idea to me. I was trying to log on when the ads were being installed - lagged a bit. Do you guys get "X" amount of money per pre-order? Per click? Explain yourselves!

At the moment we're running a promotion co-ordinated by EA to try and increase pre-order sales of Battlefield 2. I'm not sure how much detail I can go into about that one at the moment, but I'll get back to you. What I can say is it's not per view or per click, it's per pre-order.

Once this rotation is complete we'll be putting in standard Google AdSense, which should hopefully be specific to the community - although in the off topic section I can see it coming up with some..interesting results.

eh, we just donated more money didnt we. Thought it was $10 a month to run this site. Fuck adds man, how much do you need?

Yep, there was a recent donations drive, but part of that went to paying back Rexxie what he was owed from previous months.

Depending on the feedback we'll consider the future of the ads, whether they should only be on the news site and content pages, keeping the forums totally separate, but decreasing their income by a lot (since the forums are where the majority of the people are).

The thing is, we can't, or don't want to, keep asking our users for money over and over. I think it's unfair that you have to basically fund the whole thing.

IF we are doing ads, lets do one's as least related to like BF2 tournaments, etc. Also, please no massive, epileptic seisure causing ads, I have sensitive eyes...

Ads are fine with me, but if we can lets go with as little as possible.

If the site only costs $120 a year to run I am sure donations would cover that.

It would be nice to confine the adverts to the main site.

Indeed, the running costs are one thing. At the same time, we'd like some extra cash to put into promoting the site (paying for ads on other sites, items to giveaway in competitions, etc.). Anything to raise the profile of the site.

The AdSense ads are usually about servers, battlefield and gaming in general. Of course you do get a few randoms asking you to volunteer to aid the people of Asdfighanistan.

The ads will always be a fixed size (as they are at the moment), and never animated. Either text or static images.

I don't want anyone to feel obliged to donate, whether they've been here 2 hours or 2 years. If you have any extra cash you want to chip in, great, if not that's great too! Our aim is just to have a fun, lively Battlefield community.

I don't like ads, but as we failed to keep a stream on money coming in through donations, we had to go for them.

First we'll run the ads for a test period of time, and if we feel they are not earning enough money for us to justify them being there, then we will remove them.

If I wasn't the p00r student I am, I'd be happy to donate some money. Unfortunatly I am this poor student.

Anyways, everything's fine with me to keep bfn running, as long as it's no DHTML Popup - I hate these things.
