It appears to be free to play, but you have to pay small, incremental fees to receive new/better weapons and abilities. It's like a free RPG, except if you want to have the "Uber-Master Brute Sword" in your inventory you have to pay a $5 service charge. The base game is free, with lots of additional fees if you want new content. I read a interview that had the DICE/EA exec saying he expected most people to shell out between $20-30 for the upgrades.
