The forum FAQ seems to cover these topics pretty well. Information on adding an avatar/signature is in the User Maintenance section, and BBCode is explained in "Reading And Posting Messages", including a pretty comprehensive list of available codes.

I'll add a few links to the existing FAQ items, to make it clearer. Thanks for the suggestion
