It is possible, just look at the huge amount of connections MMO servers have.

I think EA has more to do with this than it seems.

128 would be very time consuming to implement and it probably wouldn't generate a huge amount of sales, axing it is then an easy enough thing to do as it would get the game to its projected release date.

Stranger things have happened.
