Points for defense and team objectives.
It seems to me that a lot more people play just for points in BF2 compared to BF1942, and less people are interested in a team victory. In BF1942 there were generally people willing to defend the back points against sneak attacks. In BF2 everyone wants to be at the front racking up points, and crucial back points often remain undefended and fall prey to sneak attacks (the MEC airfield at Kubra Dam is a good example).
Of course its more fun to be in the thick of the fight, but in BF2 staying on defense means that you'll be rather lacking in points as well. Wouldn't it be nice if the game awarded points for this sort of thing? One way might be to award more points for the "defended flag" thing and increase its range, depending on the number of defenders and remoteness of the flag, or even its strategic value. This could be a good incentive to defend as well as attack.
Another simple idea is to give every member of the winning team a bonus, not just the commander. Say a 50% point bonus... of course to prevent people from jumping team to get in on the bonus, only points earned on the winning team should count. This should promote better teamwork and interest in the team objective.
