My 50 cents
Good advice above. Come on soldiers you can do it.
About the Commander
Commanders try to have some type of strategy before giving out orders.
Don't give orders for squads to travel from one end of the map to the other; keep the distances short and simple for the squads.
Keep distances within 200 m of the previous order.
Allow a cover squad to assist in case needed.
Prevent scattered units over the map, unless using guerrilla tactics.
Maintain the front line as much as possible.
See that the squads are up to strength and resupplied before giving new orders that can require losses.
Commander Strategy
Determine which map location(s) is vital to your operation and make that point(s) an objective. Tell the squads and units where the objective is. Aide the squads in reaching that objective location. Achieve one objective at a time.
OK, to for BEL (behind enemy lines) probes/attack, but use it as an diversion for the main force to take an objective near the front line.
About the Squad Leader
The above applies to SL, but on a smaller level. When commander gives an order, divide up the distance into sub-distances (sub-goals) for your squad to reach.
