Thank you for your suggestion. I followed it, and it worked perfectly. I was not aware that I could bind the joystick from within BF. If anyone else decides to go this route I recommend that you completely shut down Wingman Profiler - I won't go so far as to say uninstall it, because it might prove useful for other games.
As a side note, I experienced occasional conflicts from having a Microsoft Sidewinder USB Gamepad plugged in at the same time as the Wingman Extrememe joystick - mainly, the system would fail to recognize that I had the joystick plugged in. The best solution was to leave the gamepad unplugged.
