Category IconEA, wheres the games?
Posted at 00:07:51 CST by kook
MacNN, a popular mac enthusiast site has posted an article inquiring as to where the Electronic Arts titles promised for mac have gone. Apparently EA was part of the June Apple conference (at which the iphone was launched) and announced that amongst others, Battlefield 2142 would be ported to mac.

From the information available we are under the impression that Electronic Arts has chosen "CIDER", a product of Transgaming (famous for using WINE to run games under linux), to run non-native games. These titles were also supposed to be launched no later then July of this year(?).

From the article "Ea Games will use CIDER":
Cider is a portability engine that allows Windows games to be run on Intel Macs "without any modifcations to the original game source code."

Gordon promised that the first titles to ship for Macs would include Command & Conquer 3, Battlefield 2142, Need for Speed Carbon, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and that those titles would ship in July. It's now more than a week into August, and none of the promised titles have arrived, nor has Electronic Arts made any announcements on the subject. Several calls and emails to EA's press department by MacNN staff have gone unanswered.

For more information, check out "EA Fails to Ship the Games". Hopefully EA will provide a community update addressing these questions.

Category IconCompensation for BF2 stats outage
Posted at 18:55:52 CST by grim reaper
Following the June outage of Battlefield 2 player stats, DICE and EA have been working to compensate all players who were active during that time for the frustrating inconvenience we realize this issue represented. We were particularly eager to provide this as it was recently discovered that stats from some 64 player servers during the outage period cannot be recovered as we had previously believed and sincerely hoped. Stats from smaller servers should be unaffected however we realize this still represents a disappointing loss of play time recognition for some players and wish to apologize for that unanticipated outcome.

After examining all the options, it has been decided that players who were active during the stats outage will be granted an additional 2000 points as well as a gold star. This will be awarded to over 150,000 affected players from midnight onwards (US West coast time) on Wednesday August 8th. We hope this goes some way towards redressing the balance and wish to again apologize for the frustration this stats issue represented for many of you.

Category IconIn game adverts in Battlefield 2
Posted at 22:25:27 CST by grim reaper

It appears that the new map for Battlefield 2 that EA have just released contains in game adverts. This is the first case of adverts appearing in Battlefield 2 and I hope that this does not spread to the rest of the maps. It is also interesting to note that the adverts are taken directly from Battlefield 2142, one of the adverts anachronistically refers to Intel Core 2 Duo processors as being "136 years strong".

Category IconBF2 1.41 Patch Released
Posted at 15:25:07 CST by kook
The Dice Live team has released the anticipated 1.41 patch targeted to resolve issues ranked server providers have been experiencing. The patch should make server admins lives a bit easier and players should experience slightly less servers that are crashing.

Things continue to move within the Battlefield Universe. Today we are releasing the 1.41 patch for Battlefield 2 that resolves an intermittent crash that affected game servers. Although this is a small update this improvement will greatly improve the stability for players. This patch will be available beginning at 8:00am PST.

We are also continuing our Beta Testing for the Battlefield 2142 1.05 update while adding further enhancements to our Master Server systems to help eliminate the disconnect issues affecting some players. These updates were introduced during Tuesdays maintenance and do not require any updating by players. As we move closer to the 1.05 release we are also stepping up our enforcement of policies against players who exploit the stats system.

With over 100 player accounts already wiped our support staff will continue to address the accounts of players who use exploit tactics to advance themselves. We will also be announcing policy changes regarding player cheating and stats exploit in the near future.

For all players who are interested in hosting their own Battlefield 2142 server the new Server Provider Page is now live. Please check out this page in order to easily locate a Ranked Server Provider in your region.

As always keep your eyes to this space for all your Battlefield Updates,

-Your DICE Live Team

Category IconSuper Sonic Gunshots in BF2
Posted at 01:26:06 CST by kook
Battlefield Modder SurvivorGrim has posted a video demonstration of what is being referred to as "Super Sonic Gunshots in BF2". Here is the gist of it..

He goes by the nick SurvivorGrim, and what he created serves as a superb example of the direction that combat audio in realistic games should be heading. Using Battlefield 2 as a basis, he created a small sound mod that adds the supersonic crack effects into the game.
..
Some people have raised questions as to the flaws of this model. For those of you that have never heard it in reality and can't distinguish where it does things right and where it's wrong, I'll clarify. At close range, the muzzle blast of the weapon should dominate and drown out a lot of the 'snap', whereas at further ranges the muzzle blast will have become muffled and the snap will be crisp and loud. So, the close-quarters sections of this video are not entirely accurate, but the long-range stuff is a good example of how it should sound.

Apparently after the mod began to spread around the net, BF2 Mod Project Reality has committed to adding these "super sonic gunshots" into the release.

Be sure to check out the Super Sonic Gunshots video and associated information here. Do note that there is a Battlefield 2 video with ingame footage at the top of the page as well as a real life "super sonic gunshot" clip a few paragraphs below.
